We reimagined sidewalk scaffolding.
For over fifty years, the industry accepted that construction and public space were fundamentally at odds. Urban Umbrella was built on the belief that they never had to be.
The Origin
Born from a competition. Built for a city.

In 2009, New York City issued a challenge: Rethink sidewalk scaffolding. The urbanSHED international design competition invited architects, engineers, and designers from around the world to reimagine something that had gone unchanged for decades, blighting streets, hurting businesses, and punishing pedestrians with every new project.
"The question was never whether sidewalk scaffolding could be better. The question was why no one had done it yet."
Urban Umbrella answered that challenge. What followed was years of engineering refinement, safety validation, and real-world performance testing. When it launched, it became the first new sidewalk scaffolding system introduced in over fifty years.
That gap, between what the industry had always accepted and what was actually possible, is exactly where Urban Umbrella was built to operate.
Construction shouldn't cost the city its character.

The Conviction
Every Urban Umbrella installation starts from the same premise: A construction project is not a concession. It is an opportunity: to protect the businesses around it, preserve the surrounding public space.

The Approach
Traditional scaffolding solves a compliance problem. Urban Umbrella solves the compliance problem as well as everything else. Open, light-filled sidewalks keep ground-floor tenants commercially visible and pedestrians happy.

The Standard
Integrated LED lighting that exceeds code. Not because it has to, but because the existing standard was set too low. PE-stamped engineering on every installation. $10M insurance as a baseline, not an upgrade.

Every installation is designed and stamped by licensed professional engineers, code-compliant in every market we operate, and backed by a $10M insurance policy. Load capacity ranges from 50 PSF to 600+ PSF. There is no version of an Urban Umbrella project that doesn't meet this standard.
Urban Umbrella is a patented system, not a product category. Its pre-engineered, modular architecture can be configured for any project complexity, from a single-storey retail façade to a multi-block infrastructure corridor. The same design intelligence that won the urbanSHED competition is present in every deployment.
Standard clearance heights of 12'–16', against the industry's 8'–10'. Arched bracing that opens the sidewalk rather than disrupting it. Integrated LED lighting that makes the structure feel like an amenity. The experience for pedestrians, tenants, and contractors is the benchmark, not an afterthought.
Reusable, modular steel components with bolted connections, designed from the outset to be deployed, relocated, and redeployed rather than retired. Urban Umbrella operates on the principle that a responsibly-built temporary structure is one that doesn't need to be built twice.
Today, the premium choice. Tomorrow, the only specification.

The Standard
Urban Umbrella currently operates in 21 markets across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Every project adds to a body of work that is quietly changing what developers, contractors, and city authorities expect from sidewalk scaffolding.
The long-term objective is straightforward: Any serious project specifies Urban Umbrella. Not because it is the better alternative, but because it has become the standard against which every alternative is measured.
